Ronald Warren Anderson, known as Ron Anderson, was born in Honolulu on February 7, 1946; Anderson discovered his musical gifts at an incredibly young age. Soon after his family relocated to Long Beach, California, the then-seven-year-old started performing weekly on a local radio program dedicated to educating listeners about music from around the world.

Within several years, he landed a spot as a Mouseketeer on The Mickey Mouse Club, then had to turn that spot down due to his parents’ disapproval. But while his family adamantly resisted the idea of his venturing into show business, Anderson continued to pursue his musical passion, and at age 13 joined The Young Americans (a professional show choir originally formed to accompany the likes of Bing Crosby and Julie Andrews on CBS specials).

As he toured extensively with The Young Americans, Anderson began cultivating his love for opera, taking a lead role in an opera production at Long Beach City College when he was just 15. Along with becoming a member of the Pacific Opera Theatre at age 16, he performed in several local choirs throughout his teens, singing with Roger Wagner Chorale in the last concert ever conducted by Igor Stravinsky.

During his final year of high school, Anderson received an offer to join The Association (the ’60s pop group known for such classic hits as “Cherish” and “Windy”). But just before going into rehearsals with the group, he suffered severe damage to his vocal cords—a turn of events that soon altered his entire trajectory. Under the guidance of CBS chairman William S. Paley, Anderson underwent a treatment protocol that involved spending eight months in total isolation on an uninhabited island near Tahiti.

Once he’d completed that period of uninterrupted vocal rest, the 18 – year – old returned to the U.S.fully recovered and quickly immersed himself in intensive vocal training with world-renowned conductor Fritz Zweig and his wife/fellow teacher Tilly.

Ron Anderson is not only a vocal coach but also is an accomplished singer himself

As he developed the specialized skills that would later inform his own training approach, Anderson rebuilt his voice into a phenomenal instrument. At the same time, he mastered German, French, and Italian in preparation for his soon-to-ascend career as an internationally celebrated opera singer. In his early 20s, Anderson headed to Europe to sharpen his craft by studying with luminaries like German operatic soprano Lotte Lehmann.

Over the coming decade, he took the stage at many of Europe’s most prestigious opera houses (including the Palais Garnier in Paris and the Royal Opera House in London), sometimes performing in up to 50 opera productions per year. Although he started out as a baritone, Anderson steadily increased his vocal range and eventually executed an astonishing transition into heldentenor (widely considered one of the rarest and most demanding voices in opera). Firmly committed to the constant refinement of his voice, he also studied the bel canto technique with Benvenuto Finelli: an esteemed teacher known for training Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, as well as many famed opera singers.

Upon returning to the U.S. in the late 1970s, Anderson embarked on the next chapter of his career. He made his first foray into vocal coaching—a breakthrough that happened almost serendipitously. While visiting the studio where Earth, Wind & Fire were recording, Anderson gave bandleader Maurice White a gentle suggestion to hit a particularly difficult note. Struck by Anderson’s insight and expertise, White encouraged his bandmates to work with Anderson and later praised his skills to other members of the music community. Within less than two weeks, Anderson had amassed dozens of clients, entirely through word-of-mouth.

Arguably the best vocal coach in the music industry

Ron Anderson was a vocal teacher of massively successful artists as Neil Diamond, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, John Legend, Shania Twain, Usher, and Seal, among many more highly popular music stars. In a testament to his singular strength as a teacher, Anderson’s notable accomplishments include taking Axl Rose on as a client before the formation of Guns N’ Roses—then working with the notoriously rebellious frontman to adapt his singing approach carefully and, in turn, preserve the power of his formidable vocals for the past three decades.

The essence of Anderson’s teaching lies in a rare ability to identify the profoundly specific and wholly unique impediments faced by each student in their attempts at vocal projection. Using a training program he’s dubbed the Voixtek Method, Anderson then works to correct those issues by guiding the student by making precise adjustments to their physical behavior to expand the muscularity of the vocal tract. Along with employing his comprehensive knowledge of the vocal tract’s anatomical structure, the Voixtek Method applies techniques like breath management to effectively reprogram the body’s natural movement, thus allowing the student to achieve optimal vocal projection virtually by instinct.

Known for delivering astoundingly fast yet sustainable results, Anderson has also established himself as a leading vocal producer, with countless artists calling on him for help in reaching peak performance during the recording process. With many Grammy Award-winning and platinum-selling albums under his belt, he’s also become a go-to vocal coach for the film and TV industry, working with such A-list actors as Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Brad Pitt, and Anne Hathaway in preparing for roles involving singing.

Besides, Anderson has devoted a great deal of time to touring with artists, accompanying his students on the road to provide regular vocal tune-ups and hands-on instruction in properly protecting the voice. To that end, he recently completed three-and-a-half years of touring with The Weeknd, coaching the Grammy Award-winning R&B singer through his performance of 32 songs per night.

Now dividing his time between Los Angeles and Florida, Anderson continues to teach in both locations, frequently joining artists mid-tour to offer on-the-spot coaching for emergency vocal problems. He’s also spent much of the last 12 years developing a vocal coaching app designed to bring his knowledge to the masses. Set to launch in 2019, the Voixtek app uses virtual-reality technology to share Anderson’s most time-tested and powerful techniques so that artists and aspiring singers worldwide can benefit from his one-of-a-kind teaching.
